My Way is a Korean historical war drama about an elite runner and his friends who get Shanghaied (Tokyo-haied?) into fighting for the Japanese. There is a lot of typical Korean goofiness in the first 20-25 minutes, but shiz gets real once the fighting starts. If there’s one thing the Koreans know how do right, it’s showing people get killed in new and inventive ways on screen. The gore dial is turned up to 11, when I think an 8 would have made their point.
They portrayed the Japanese soldiers in a pretty harsh light. The Soviets didn’t come out looking too pretty either. I was impressed with the overall production: shooting locations across the globe, large scale battle scenes, and incredible special effects. I read that this was the most expensive Korean film in history, at about 25 million, but it looks like 5 times that much.
