Harry Brown (2009)

I can't be the first, or the last, to say "The British Gran Torino". Meant as a total compliment, of course. The similarities are many, with the most striking being an outstanding performance by a seasoned actor in the lead role. It's what elevates both of these revenge flicks to a much higher level.

I thoroughly enjoyed Harry Brown. It plays out rather plausibly. By the time the baddies get what's coming to them, the viewer is practically wet with anticipation for their demise. Hooray for old guys with guns!

Wild Bill (2011)

A British film about a deadbeat dad coming home to his abandoned boys after serving a stint in prison. Great performances and direction. They handled the heaviness of the story without allowing things to get too depressing. Enjoyed.

The Fifth Element (1997)

I love Luc Besson's depiction of the future in this film; the special effects and imagery are amazing. The story is a bit of a stretch, but I like when directors think outside the box, rather than keeping with the same, standard formula. Chris Tucker makes an early debut as a whacked out space DJ. Gary Oldman returns as another fabulous evil character, and Bruce Willis shows off his acting chops. Mila Jonavich is great, and super cute in this role. The movie is a lot of fun and a must see.
