Burn After Reading (2008)

I love the Coen Brothers as much as anybody, but seriously, this movie was all over the place. The only thing I can think of is that the point of the movie is that there was no point. It's pointless on purpose. An exercise in futility.

Dark humor only works if it's funny, and this script rarely was. A story unfolded which held my attention. That's all it did. I could have just as easily been watching the Home & Garden network for a couple hours.

The Namesake (2006)

I'm always up for a film that gives me an inside look at a culture I'm mostly unfamiliar with. The pacing is slow--but on the upside, character development is both intimate and rich. Some very touching scenes and a sweet story. A little more editing couldn't hurt though.

You Can Count On Me (2000)

It took me until halfway through the movie to be sure I’d already seen it. Not a winning endorsement. There are some interesting characters, but nothing really grabbed me. The kid is the most likeable thing about the film.

The Squid and the Whale (2005)

I can appreciate what this movie was trying to do, but in the end, I really didn't want it done. It's one of those indie films that likes to shock it's audience by engaging minors in adult situations with plenty of harsh language. There are some good scenes here and there, but it's mostly depressing.
