Marty Supreme (2025)

 

This movie is a lot. It’s long. It’s tedious. It’s filled with characters who make poor choices. One could draw comparisons to John Safdie’s previous film, Uncut Gems, which I hated. 

Marty Supreme has some lighter moments that helped keep the viewer from complete despair. The ping pong action scenes are amazing. Timothee trained in the sport for 6-7 years in preparation for this role. Seems like CGI would have saved him a lot of trouble, but he’s a method actor.

A Complete Unknown (2024)

 

I’ve never been a fan of Bob Dylan’s music. His voice annoyed me. It’s only been in recent years that my ears have been worn down enough to appreciate his sound. Timothée Chalamet’s renditions of Dylan’s music is impressive. There were a lot of other talented musicians too. It’s the live performances that elevate the film.

Dune: Part Two (2024)

It was fine. I had to watch some recap videos to remember what happened three years ago in the first one. The sequel doubled down on the holy prophecies and sand worms.

How does one board their entire clan on one of those things anyway? How do you get off? How do you steer them? How do you stop the worm from going underground? Don’t bother asking these questions. The movie has no answers. It’s fine.

Dune (2021)

 

I thought they did a pretty good job developing the story without confusing the audience. The desert planet was full of creative surprises. Love those dragonfly ships. At two and a half hours, I felt some editing was in order. Plenty of extended shots with dramatic music playing that could have been whittled down. But I’m definitely in for the next installment.

The French Dispatch (2021)

 

Likely my least favorite of Wes Anderson’s films. The cinematography, sets, and editing were wonderful, but the story was a convoluted disaster. It felt like a computer program was fed all of Wes’ previous work and vomited out a script. Interesting to watch, but not up to par.

Lady Bird (2017)

A sharp snapshot of a semi-rebellious girl surviving her high school years. The writing is incredibly on point, as is the acting. Fabulous performances all around. So much awkwardness.
